SYDNEY EXPERIMENTAL ART GALLERY
S.E.A Gallery is an experimental art facility that hosts mixed media art by individual artists and collective projects. The gallery has a playful atmosphere with remarkable views of Sydney Harbor which aims to attract both a national and international audience, exhibiting works that engage all age groups. It is home to textile artworks, installation art, and performance art, with frequent inclusions of, sculpture, painting, drawing, video, sound work, interactive art, and new media art. S.E.A’s experimental nature attempts to blur the line between the 2D, 3D, and 4-dimensional arts. The gallery takes a form that explores the landscape. It utilises pathways and considers subtraction as a concept and not addition. Voids and spatial volumes are subtracted according to the need of the galleries need, functions, circulation, and natural light. The numerous entrances allow for a multitude of experiences rather than one single journey. The sculptural roof structure emulates the dynamic movement of the water directly below, which represents the detailing of a breaking wave being stopped in time. The creation of narrow spaces, which gradually expand, release visitors into a space in which they can breathe in their surroundings. The materials of the gallery seamlessly blend it into the landscape. Reminiscent of Miralles, earthy materials are used such as concrete, stone, and wood to achieve this combination. The gabion walls, concrete and wooden pavers embedded into the groundscape evoke the rough landscape. The maze-like plan sparks curiosity within the visitors, guiding them on a non-stagnant route. The amphitheater imitates the contours of the landscape, creating an inviting and welcoming environment, rather than harsh angles. The overall experience of the S.E.A Gallery is to be one of innovation, inspiration, and freedom of expression through the visual medium.
